Interview with 大虎工房, the developer of 白の少女 (White Girl)
As usual, we were not hired or paid to feature this game. If it’s bad, we’ll tell you it’s bad.
Do you remember our review of a colorful card-based battle game called 白の少女 (White Girl)? Well, today we would like to share our exciting interview with the 大虎工房 team, the developers of 白の少女 (White Girl)!
If you have yet to check out our review of 白の少女 (White Girl), you can do so here!
Before we start we’d like to thank the 大虎工房 Team for participating in our interview and for answering all of our geeky questions! Thanks Guys!
…and without further ado, our interview begins…
Thanks for taking the time to talk to us about 白の少女 (White Girl)! Could you kick-start this interview by telling us a little about your studio, yourself, and what drew you into the gaming industry?
I established my studio because I wanted to bring players a brand new gaming experience. Nowadays, most popular games are high quality. That being said, I feel that these games don’t challenge game design. I wanted to try my skill in the genre of game design and wanted to know if my games would be accepted by other gamers. That is the reason why I established my gaming studio.
The gaming business has very high productivity now. The era where “Everyone can make a game”, has come.
I definitely think the techniques used to make games have evolved. However, in my opinion, the ideas these games are based on have not evolved much in comparison. I wanted to challenge gamers with my game which I think is based on a very novel idea.
Ok, let’s start talking about 白の少女 (White Girl)… What are the highlights of your latest release?
The main two things I focused most on were – a better battle balance and the implementation of the ranking system. (In addition, you can now also view monthly player rankings.)
What was the core idea or inspiration behind 白の少女 (White Girl)? And perhaps more importantly, where do you find inspiration for your games in general?
“白の少女 (White Girl)” started with the concept that I wanted to give players a brand new gaming experience. At first, this game didn’t have the concept of “color”. I abstractly thought it would be cool if I could make a game I could play together with my friends – a little like a board game.
I was also obsessed with making a real-time game, not a turn-based game (like Hearthstone, Gwent, etc) because the game I was trying to make was obviously a “video game” and I wanted to use its features.
Also, I personally like the girls who appear in Japanese Anime and Adventure Games. I always had a feeling… I mean… I always wanted to coordinate these girl’s clothing in my own favorite colors. (This dream gave me the motivation to enhance graphics of this game.)
It was then that I realized that this combination of “Board Game + Real-Time Gameplay + One’s Favorite Color” could be a brand new idea for a game!
I must say that I am especially influenced by these games – Dominion, Magic the Gathering, and Pokemon.
How long was 白の少女 (White Girl) in development for? And are there any interesting and/or exciting moments or experiences you would like to share with us from that time?
It took about 2 years to develop 白の少女 (White Girl). The most exciting moment was when I saw my girl’s appearance change in real-time in the actual network game. It felt as though the girl I played as in the game was actually alive; in addition, I felt like talking with opponents through the game.
I still remember this feeling and do not want to forget.
What software, developer-tools, or black-magic(?) did you use when making 白の少女 (White Girl)? Is there anything you would like to share with the developers who read Edamame Reviews?
The developer-tools are conventional. Unity, Live2D, and Photon.
If I had to say I used black-magic, I would probably say the magic I used was… ガッツ！(The Japanese word for “guts” or “persistence”)
Is there any secret “developer-advice” you can give our lucky players who read this interview?
Since “白の少女 (White Girl)” has an element of luck, it has two faces – this game is a strategic battle game and a party game. If you can color your girl the way you like, I swear you will feel a certain kind of joy…
You might not be able to win the game, but who cares? You have made your own girl! Please share the feeling with your friends on Social Media. I swear some users and friends will resonate with you!
What can we expect to see in 白の少女 (White Girl) or from 大虎工房 in the not so distant future? What do we have to look forward to next?
For starters, I want to release my game on Steam and/or Nintendo Switch.
In the future, I again want to make a game which revolves around the concept of “color”. Also, I want to add some card sets to “白の少女 (White Girl)”.
Lastly, is there anything you would like to say to our awesome team of Writers, Developers, and Patrons who keep Edamame Reviews up and running?
First of all, I want to thank Edamame Reviews who gave me a chance to talk about my game on their site. I admire Edamame Reviews’ attitude that tries to review games as just one liberal gamer. I am sure my gaming studio will grow through this review.
I want to develop my content more, and I want you guys to help with it.
Thank you so much!
