The Interview

Thanks for taking the time to talk to us about JackQuest! Could you kick-start this interview by telling us a little about your studio, yourself, and what drew you into the gaming industry?

My name is Jose Neto, I created the company called NXGAMES with a focus on indie games, I am a husband, father and game developer in my free time. Currently working with systems development in a company. I like to see how people interact with my games and what they think.

For me, it was always an interesting market so I always wanted to be part of it.

Ok, let’s start talking about JackQuest… What are the highlights of your latest release?

I’ve always wanted to play a game with pleasant moves and exploration, and that’s what I tried to do in JackQuest, jump over spikes and climb walls while exploring a cave full of dangers.

What was the core idea or inspiration behind JackQuest? And perhaps more importantly, where do you find inspiration for your games in general?

I love RPG games. I still play table games with my friends, and I can say that Nintendo games are my inspiration – games such as Mario and Kirby among others.

But there is one specific and little known game that caught my attention, it is called Endeavor, and can be found here at Kongreate.

It is possible to see how a game even with simple graphics can be deep. JackQuest had the inspiration in all this.

How long was JackQuest in development for? And are there any interesting and/or exciting moments or experiences you would like to share with us from that time?

JackQuest took almost 2 years to complete, I had little time to dedicate myself to the game, I think one of the coolest moments of the game was when I was able to add the scarf, it was something I was not thinking, it was also a tip from a friend. I was very happy with the result.

What software, developer-tools, or black-magic(?) did you use when making JackQuest? Is there anything you would like to share with the developers who read Edamame Reviews?

I have tested various development tools like Unity, Cocos2d-x, Shiva3d, Corona and Gamemaker. I decided to stay with Gamemaker as I was involved in the community and it really is a great tool to create games.

For my sprites, I used GraphicsGale, a simple and agile tool for drawing.

Is there any secret “developer-advice” you can give our lucky players who read this interview?

I think focus on the gameplay, create something simple that works well, even if it is not possible to innovate in the gameplay, a new story can always be told.

What can we expect to see in JackQuest or from Nxgames in the not so distant future? What do we have to look forward to next?

I’m trying my best to stay just developing games, I believe that with more time and dedication I can create fun games with deeper gameplay.

I am currently working on 2 projects, but I cannot comment on them yet, I am also thinking about creating new content for JackQuest where it will be possible to play with Kuro before he is cursed.

Lastly, is there anything you would like to say to our awesome team of Writers, Developers, and Patrons who keep Edamame Reviews up and running?

You are incredible and creative! Very high-quality content, it is great to see honest reviews that try to really capture how the game is. Very good job. 😃
