Our interview with the AdoreStudio Team, the creators of Ninja Dude vs Zombies

Do you love cute games? If so, chances are you’ve never had the opportunity to play a full on zombie smashing game before… Until now!

Ninja Dude vs Zombies is the first cute zombie smasher game we’ve ever seen for your iPhone. With no grotesque splattering guts – no flying heads or arms – just a horde of cute and cuddly zombies swarming below your tower… this may be the first zombie game you can actually enjoy.

Read our original review here.

Before we start, we’d like to thank the AdoreStudio Team for participating in our interview, and for spending some of their valuable time answering our questions. Thanks guys!

Now without further ado our interview begins…

The Interview

Ok first up, why did you decide to make Ninja Dude vs Zombies?

Well, that’s actually a long-running story. About 5 years ago one of us suggested making a game based on Ork Attack (Creative Sparks, 1984 for ZX Spectrum). We took its setting (enemies assailing castle walls) and created a flash game prototype with a ninja on top of a tower (say, castle walls) and zombies trying to kill you. Due to some circumstances, this idea was forgotten. One day, when we were free from ongoing development projects, we decided to get back to our prototype and make something out of it. Timberman – that had been already released at the time – served well for us, because we decided to merge it with Ork Attack. We still don’t know if it was a good idea or not 😉

Cool, so what programming language and or software did you use when making Ninja Dude vs Zombies?

We used C#. The game is built on Unity. Also, we used Adobe products, Bfxr sound generator (awesome and free!), Esotericsoftware, and Spine.

Ok, here is a difficult question. What was the hardest problem you needed to overcome when developing Ninja Dude vs Zombies?

Indeed it is! Let us think. Oh, yes! Some problems were caused by Apple Game Center. When you’re connecting to the Game Center, the game lags and freezes for some time. We’re thinking of keeping user highscores on Facebook instead.

What’s more, the biggest gameplay issue was to explain to the players how they should kill off zombies to generate combos and prevent the tower from going down. You need to tap zombies only after they cross the death line! That’s the trickiest part of the game, and its tutorial part was not 100% clear to gamers as Youtube videos and our analytics showed. Still working on polishing this tutorial part (it’s our 4th iteration).

Last question. Where do you get your inspiration or ideas from?

For the final iteration of Ninja Dude vs Zombies we got our inspiration from Timberman. All the rest, including our weird characters, was made up after drinking several cups of coffee with delicious cookies!😃

We love your way of getting inspired! Cookies are awesome😉
