Our interview with Simon Crack the creator of Drop Block ■…

Drop Block ■ was a game probably best described as a treat for your ears. The soundtrack, for this game is awsome, and the graphics go with it perfectly. 

The only “problem” you could ever have with this game is that it is almost impossible…

Before we start, I’d like to thank Simon Crack for participating in our interview, and for spending some of his valuable time in answering our questions. Thank you very much Simon.

Now without any further ado our interview begins.

 

The Interview

Ok first up, why did you decide to make Drop Block ■?

We set out to create a really HARD but addicting game this time around.

We tested different versions of the game, some easier, some much harder!

But found a balance – if it was too easy it became boring quickly. We drew inspiration from the game 99 challenges and other minimal one touch games.


Wow, so what programming language and or software did you use when making Drop Block ■?

All minimal graphics were created in Adobe illustrator and Photoshop.

We used BuildBox game building software to create the game very swiftly in about a week. Play testing and tweaking took a little longer.

We use BuildBox a lot as it’s super simple drag and drop software to create games without needing to code.

That way we can focus on the important thing, making a fun game!


Ok, here is a mean question. What was the hardest problem you needed to overcome when developing Drop Block ■?

Actually this type of game play is not easy to create with BuildBox we had to use some out of the box thinking to enable the player to go from left to right and then back again on the next line.

This issue was solved with a lot of ‘invisible’ rigging on either side of the screen that the user does not see.

This took the most tweaking to get right. Once we nailed that the rest was simple.


Last question. Where do you get your inspiration or ideas from?

We play a lot of casual games and have always been avid gamers.

Ideas come at all different times of the day and we always make sure to write them down whenever we get the light bulb moment, so we can prototype them when we are back in the office.

Often the best ideas come when you are relaxed and not actively trying to think of an idea!
