Interview with Peter Dekkers and the creators of Catchy Crystals

Catchy Crystals is a cool little game from the new indie studio Eye Bop Co.

Being our second game to be featured on Edamame Reviews under our new rank “New Indie Developer” (created exclusively for new and talented studios) both Catchy Crystals and the Eye Bop team are overflowing with potential.

Original Review -> Check it out!

Before we start, we’d like to thank Peter Dekkers for participating in our interview, and for spending some of his valuable time in answering our questions. Thanks Peter.

Now without any further ado our interview begins.

Ok first up, why did you decide to make Catchy Crystals?

We have always reserved a special place in our hearts for video games. Ever since playing Atari 2600 games like River Raid and Warlords. And especially after playing our way through games like Wonder Boy, Bubble Bobble, all the Super Mario Bros. and Zelda franchise games and Mario Kart. Those games – and many others – left a mark!

A few years back we set out to make something that we could be proud of, something that could brighten someone’s day. For a few months we searched – inwards and outwards – for what that could be. One fine day we came to the conclusion that had been in front of us from the very beginning. We could turn this great love for video games into a creation. And share it with the World!

This is still what makes us tick a few years on. ๏◡๏

I see, so what programming language and or software did you use when making Catchy Crystals?

We’re living in a Golden Age for content creators. We were very fortunate to have excellent software options available to make a compelling game on a teeny tiny startup budget. We chose Unity as our game engine, Blender as our modelling software and Affinity Designer to create all 2D art and graphics.

Ok, here is a mean question. What was the hardest problem you needed to overcome when developing Catchy Crystals?

The game was for a large part the result of one person’s work and ongoing focus. Keeping the dream alive for two years while learning how to make a game – and make a good game at that – was the hardest challenge by far. Making games is… hard!

Coming out the other end with Catchy Crystals makes us feel very proud and happy. And this is only the beginning.

Last question. Where do you get your inspiration or ideas from?

Inspiration can come from the darnedest of places. We came up with the concept of catching crystal sequences while gazing at the Milky Way on a camping trip near Wellington, New Zealand. We’ve also received inspiration from listening to our favourite music and of course from playing some rad recent games like sound shapes, Rust Bucket and Rayman Legends.

We also love to hear from people playing our games.

A few words to Catchy Crystals fans on Edamame Reviews.

At Eye Bop co. we have a lot of plans for Catchy Crystals. We’re adding some new social features soon that will make the game more complete in our eyes. We plan to add new environments and enemies to the game also. We don’t see Catchy Crystals as a final product that’s done and dusted, but rather as a living creation. A framework for fun!

We’ve also tentatively started prototyping another game idea which focuses on planetary exploration. Stay tuned for that one. (-‿-)✌

Lastly a few words on how you feel about Edamame Reviews and our service.
