Interview with Michael Oudenhoven the creator of Space Erase

Space Erase is a really cool puzzle game we really hope you’ve had the chance to try.

Today we’d like to share with you our interview with the developer of this brain twisting game, Michael Oudenhoven.

Michael has been great to work with and we really look forward to seeing his next app on Edamame Reviews.

Before we start we’d like to say a big thank you to Michael for kindly taking the time to answer all our interview questions, “Thank you very much.”

Now, without any further ado, here is our interview with Michael Oudenhoven- the creator of Space Erase.

Ok first up, why did you decide to make Space Erase?

After going back and forth between a few different ideas I decided to go with Space Erase because I believe it is the first puzzle game of its kind on the App Store. I wanted to create something unique that had never been done before.

I see, so what programming language and or software did you use when making Space Erase?

I used Obective-C and Xcode to make Space Erase. I was in the process of learning Objective-C when Swift first game out so I decided to stick with it thorough out the development of Space Erase. Although you could say Apple is trying to phase out Objective-C with Swift, Objective-C I found was a great choice because there is a lot of help across forums for the language. This made troubleshooting much easier when I would run into problems.

As other software went, I used Inkscape and Garage Band quite a bit for the graphics and sound design. Inkscape was a great resource because it was free and open source so I didn’t have to break the bank for vector graphics software. The same goes for Garage Band. I had an old keyboard laying around and it was free software that could give me studio like sound for no extra cost.

Ok, here is a mean question. What was the hardest problem you needed to overcome when developing Space Erase?

In all honesty I would say my most challenging moment during the development of Space Erase was the design of the graphics and sound. Since I am a one man development team, everything in the game I have made. Art isn’t necessarily my strong suit, and I didn’t have money to hire a professional artist so the graphics took me a while to develop and to make something that I was proud of.

On the coding side of things my biggest challenge was setting up the project to work on all Apple devices. I found there wasn’t a ton help online relating to this so it took me awhile to get the auto layout to function on every device just how I wanted.

Last question. Where do you get your inspiration or ideas from?

I try to look at things that are popular now and in the past. I try to learn from past games that have made it big and some that haven’t, and take away which things people liked (interface, gameplay, etc.) and then put my own unique spin onto them. How exactly the idea of Space Erase came to mind is pretty much a mystery, it just came into my head and I went with it.

A few words to Space Erase fans on Edamame Reviews.

I am currently in the work of my next game (doesn’t have a name yet). I am hoping to cut down the development time and release it somewhere in the next six months. The concept of the game is currently a secret and I’ll be tweeting about it (@AppcoLLC) once it gets closer to launch.

Lastly a few words on how you feel about Edamame Reviews and our service.

Edamame Reviews has been great. I really appreciate all the help you have given me with the promotion of Space Erase and the improvement of my app. The feedback you give me pushes me to keep improving Space Erase and future apps that I may publish.
