Interview with the DeadCool Team, The creators of Gravit8!

If you’re reading this in “real time”, you may remember that yesterday we reviewed a game called Gravit8… Today we’d like to share with you our interview with the developers who created it!

Gravit8 is a very simple game most players will eventually get to the end of. Being both easy and challenging at the same time, this game is playable by anyone, no matter what their gaming skill level is! …a very unique game to say the least.

Read our full review of Gravit8 here.

Before we start, we’d like to thank Simon Crack from the DeadCool Team for participating in our interview, and for spending some of his valuable time answering our questions. Thanks Simon!

Now without any further ado our interview begins.

Ok first up, why did you decide to make Gravit8?

We were playing around with the new features of BuildBox 2 (the software we use to make games) and it had a new path feature, where the character could be made to travel in any direction along a set path. That gave us the seed of an idea for what eventually turned into Gravit8.

Gravit8 is a much much simpler game than pretty much all of your previous creations. What was it that prompted you to create such a simple game?

We always try to make simple games for casual players.

I guess Gravit8 is as simple as you can get game play wise – just tap. However some of the levels are quite tricky! The learning curve is definitely easier in Gravit8 than some of our other games, this comes as a direct result from feedback (we do read all our reviews😉)

Thank you for reading our reviews😊Ok, next up, so what programming language and or software did you use when making Gravit8?

As mentioned we use BuildBox game building software exclusively.

It’s extremely fast to prototype and create games and great for non coders like us. We get to build games without the headache of dealing with code. BuildBox is marketed as powerpoint for game building, which I think sums it up pretty well.

Ok, here is a difficult question. What was the hardest problem you needed to overcome when developing Gravit8?

There were a ton of issues we needed to push past in order to create Gravit8. Some of the earlier problems we faced were levels not lining up properly as you progressed to the next one.

Ensuring that playing on iPhone/iPad also worked well for Apple TV (a completely different screen size) was also problematic. Then of course we needed to make sure every one of the 88 constellations worked well as a level!

Here is a question we’ve wanted to ask you ever since we first laid eyes on the games you create. How do you create such awesome slow motion effects?

Ha ha, I guess that’s become a bit of a trade mark in some of our games. It’s actually pretty simple to do in BuildBox by adjusting the ‘Time Warp’ setting.

Last question. Where do you get your inspiration and/or ideas from?

Inspiration comes from everywhere. Playing other casual games will often spark a new idea or direction we can go in.

Most of the time we just play with BuildBox and try to break it – Make it do stuff that, maybe it was not originally intended to do. Nine times out of ten nothing comes from it, but occasionally it leads us to a really unique game idea such as Circulate or Rebound.

A few words to Gravit8 fans on Edamame Reviews.

We are always actively working on 4-5 projects at any one time, in various stages of completion. Some are in the demo stages, others are nearly ready for release. We have a couple of really exciting projects coming soon – watch this space!

Lastly a few words on how you feel about Edamame Reviews and our service.

Edamame Reviews have always been great to us from the very beginning in giving honest reviews and showcasing our games. Discovery in the app store can be extremely hard, guys like you help the indie dev with discovery and that is definitely appreciated!
