Blocky Cops – Chase Crooks and watch Ads… ⁉️

Blocky Cops is a cute Cops & Robbers style avoider game about chasing crooks down the streets of New York without smashing into any pedestrians or getting destroyed by a speeding taxi. Blocky Cops (by Full Fat) is a game you will likely happily play 10 or so rounds of before giving up forever. This is the first time we’ve played a game like this before…

Blocky Cops is a cute Cops & Robbers style avoider game about chasing crooks down the streets of New York without smashing into any pedestrians or getting destroyed by a speeding taxi. The game features simple swipe-based controls and Voxel Graphics which are fairly popular at the moment, only part of the reason we selected it for review…😜

The game is played in stages – the first one obviously being the easiest – and gradually increases in difficulty. Each time you complete a stage you will be given the opportunity to select 1 of 3 trash cans the crook could be hiding in. If you choose correctly you can retrieve the stolen goods, if not you still get money.

At this point, we had already begun to question this game core mechanic as it doesn’t promote skill or even inspire the player to improve! Even if you successfully avoid all the pedestrians there is only a 1/3 chance you will win!? We like games that give us a sense of achievement, but for players who don’t really care about feeling that egocentric sense of achievement, Blocky Cops should be fine… right…?

As you progress through the game, you will be shown how to identify criminal masterminds and how, by arresting all 3 criminal masterminds, you can move on to the next city. You will also have a chance to check out all the characters you can unlock by retrieving stolen items. And then, you will see “The Pop-Up”.

Here you will be given 3 choices (Watch an Ad for 10 minutes of Ad-Free gameplay – Pay $4.50 to disable Ads altogether – or Enable Ads) if you hit that last button, Blocky Cops will essentially become unplayable! Relentlessly displaying a 5 second Ad after almost every action you perform, you’ll soon realize that you are spending more time watching Ads than actually playing the game.

We believe developers should earn money. Without them, we wouldn’t have anywhere near as much fun during those small idle slots of time throughout our day. That being said, we know for a fact that annoying your players isn’t the way to do it…

The Conclusion

Lately, we have begun seeing way too many good games with an aggressive number of Ads that essentially make them unplayable. If only Blocky Cops had fewer Ads or a more discreet method of monetization, it would be such a great game…😭
